How One Florida Cigar Shop Averted Disaster

Proper temperature and humidity monitoring is essential to prevent mold and tobacco beetles from destroying cigars. iMatrix NEO-1 and NEO-1D sensors provide accurate, real-time data to maintain optimal storage conditions across walk-in humidors, retail cabinets, and private collections.

Cigar storage

Optimal cigar storage conditions

Cigars age best when held in tight humidity bands. Drift outside these and the tobacco either dries and cracks or becomes a breeding ground for pests and mold.

Keep cigars in this band and they age properly, maintaining flavor and aroma.

Tobacco beetle prevention

The tobacco beetle can complete its entire life cycle inside a cigar. Larvae feed on tobacco until pupation, causing significant damage and making the cigar unsmokeable. Worms can also be introduced from contaminated tobacco leaves during manufacturing. The beetle thrives above 75% RH and 72°F — catching a humidity drift early can save entire inventories.

Over-humidification: 75% RH and above

Cigars become over-humidified, feeling spongy or soft with a musty or moldy odor. They're difficult to light and produce harsh smoke. Over-humidified cigars also become breeding grounds for mold and beetles — a small humidity drift can turn a single bad cigar into a warehouse-wide problem.

Under-humidification

At low humidity, cigars become dry and brittle, difficult to light, and produce hot, harsh smoke. Wrapper cracking is a clear indicator. Over prolonged low-humidity periods, cigars lose flavor and aroma — and the damage is often irreversible.

Continuous monitoring beats spot checks

A weekly manual humidity check won't catch a three-hour excursion overnight. iMatrix Neo-1 and Neo-1D log readings continuously, alert the moment conditions drift, and retain 6 months of data on-device even if your gateway goes offline.
