Where lab monitoring breaks down

Most labs still use glass thermometers or single-point digital loggers with manual weekly downloads. That model has three failure modes: (1) excursions between downloads go undetected, (2) calibration drift is invisible, (3) inspectors can't independently verify the recorded values.

What CAP and CLIA accreditation expects

Both bodies require continuous monitoring with documented accuracy. Specifically:

• Temperature verification for every critical instrument (refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, thermal cyclers)
• Calibration traceable to national standards (NIST or equivalent)
• Alert response procedures with documented follow-up
• Records retained for the lab's accreditation window (typically 2+ years)

Sensor choice by instrument

• Reagent refrigerators (2–8°C): NEO-1D NIST — display for spot checks, NIST cert for audits
• -20°C freezers: NEO-1P NIST — probe in the storage rack, not the air
• -80°C ultra-low freezers: NEO-IND — IP68 ruggedized, survives repeated freeze cycles

A typical clinical lab has 15–40 monitored instruments.
